Remembering and Learning From Major Industry Events

At Northeast Gas, we believe that safety begins with identifying and remembering what we can learn from incidents. Behind every incident in our industry are real people—families, communities, and workers—whose lives were forever changed. As we strive toward a future with safer systems to better protect our communities, it is our responsibility to remember by engaging employees in a review of the events. We welcome employee involvement in taking ownership of the assets involved as their personal responsibility. In this way, we will improve by becoming more robust, systematizing, and strengthening our safety process.

This page highlights major gas-related incidents. These events serve as solemn reminders of the critical importance of our work to assure safety. By revisiting these events with respect and care, we aim to:

  • Honor those affected by acknowledging their stories and losses.

  • Learn from investigations' results, incorporate them, and evaluate how to apply them system-wide to strengthen our safety culture.

  • Promote accountability and transparency, leading to an open environment where our employees feel safe to come forward with concerns within their individual companies and across the industry as a whole.

  • Foster continuous improvement by verifying the level of understanding about events and assuring that employees are inspired to have imagination in applying lessons and not just to connect the dots.

  • Commit to and drive safety assurance through management review, maintaining a framework of checks and balances, quantifying risks reduced, and building layers of protection to enable a higher level of performance.

These reflections focus on risk management and on requiring and strengthening competency. Our learning builds defense in depth. It reinforces the criticality of fostering a positive safety culture and building a future in which tragedies like these become increasingly rare. As we continue to expand this collection, we invite our membership to engage with these stories, add to them, carry them forward, and help ensure they lead to meaningful change.
